President of Mock Trial, senior Kiera Jonson and sophomore Ryan Bush prepare for the prosecution cross which marks the beginning of Mock Trial. Mock Trial is a great opportunity for students to see what it is like to be a lawyer and requires a lot of preparation.

Ever wanted to be a part of a court trial as a lawyer? Millbrook’s Mock Trial is where students go to learn about, practice, and reenact court trials. It is also a great public speaking experience for students who decide to join. The Mock Trial practices are held in Ms. Jones’s room, 116, every Wednesday from 2:30 to 3:45. Members of the club will sometimes even go to an attorney’s office downtown until 6:30 after their meetings. There are currently about 9 members that participate in the Mock Trial.

Mock Trial members are given a taste of what a real court trial would be like. The members practice at their meetings for the competition that the club is planning for in February. It will consist of many other schools in the area that participate in Mock Trial. Members are given a chance at being an attorney and a witness throughout. Sophomore Adam Wenzel, says, “All positions have to be taught at meetings, from expert witness to attorney. This requires the time and effort from each person involved.” The preparation includes doing witness preparation, direct questioning, and cross questioning. They are then exposed to what it is like to participate in an actual trial.

President of the Mock Trial, senior Kiera Jonson says, “I enjoy the one-on-one preparation that provides a great opportunity to see what life as a lawyer would actually be like.” She also mentions a struggle she faces as the president of the after school activity is trying to help everyone during the meetings because even she sometimes struggles. She adds that the advisors act almost as teachers at meetings for Mock Trial. Everything must be taught and retaught.

This club is fairly small in size. There is a lot of time and effort that the members of Mock Trial put into all of it. The advisors, Ms. Jones and Mr. Crawley, make the experience as serious as it can be while also having fun and enjoying it. The after school activity requires a lot of the participant’s time, but it is definitely worth their while. Members learn a lot about trials that they may not have known about before. So, if being apart of a court trial as an attorney or a witness sparks your interest at all, then make sure to look into possibly joining the Mock Trial next year.
