Not many Millbrook students can say that they are nearly trilingual, but junior Loujain Al Samara can. Arabic being her first language, Loujain learned English in fifth grade. She is now well on her way to mastering her third language, Spanish. She has been studying Spanish since sixth grade and is a member of Millbrook’s Spanish Honor Society. Her extracurricular activities do not stop there though; Loujain is a member of MEB, Poetry Club, DECA, Key Club, and Spanish Club.

On top of that, Loujain is an IB student. Regarding the IB programme, she said, “I love school, and especially being in an atmosphere where people like to learn. The learning style of IB works with students, and it makes students better thinkers.” One of the requirements of IB is to complete 150 hours of community service. So far, Loujain’s favorite community service project was volunteering at a Halloween party for the History Museum.  Loujain feels that it is imperative to be involved in high school. “Being involved helps you meet new people, figure out what you like and don’t like, and make connections,” said Loujain.

Loujain also holds leadership positions in some of the clubs she is involved in. This year Loujain is the Editor in Chief of the Tempest. She became a member of the Tempest her freshman year, even though freshmen are typically not allowed to join. About her involvement with the Tempest, Loujain said, “I like getting to see the really cool artwork that comes in. I am responsible for sorting through the submissions and working with the layout editor to put together the yearly magazine.” Loujain is also the Vice President of Community Service for Millbrook’s DECA chapter. For this role, Loujain is in charge of planning different community service activities for members to participate in.

Loujain definitely has a clear plan for her future. She hopes to attend NC State for Biomedical Engineering, and then go to medical school. Everyone on her Dad’s side of the family works in the medical field, so Loujain had the opportunity to grow up learning about different aspects of the field.

Junior Leanna Coley describes her as, “Very hardworking and super involved in school.” She also talked about how Loujain is  really skilled at making study guides and helping other students study for quizzes and tests.

In what little free time Loujain has, she enjoys spending it with friends. She and her friends like to take pictures all around Raleigh. Their favorite places to take pictures are anywhere that has a good view of downtown Raleigh. Loujain also enjoys writing as a hobby. She started writing poems in Arabic when she was a child, and one of her life goals is to write a novel.
