As the fall sports season wraps up, four Millbrook sports teams, including the Cross Country team, Varsity girls’ Volleyball team, Women’s Tennis team, and JV Men’s Soccer team won conference championships. This is a massive accomplishment for Millbrook.
Cross Country
On Monday, October 14, the Cross Country team competed in the NAC 6 conference Championship meet at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Men’s Cross Country team became Conference champions for the fifth consecutive year. Impressively, Wyatt Pearce, Hayden Little, Tyler Nichols, Tyler Harding, Caroline Campbell, Jordan Davis, and Margaret Aitken received All-Conference honors. The team competed at regionals on October 26, and Tyler Nichols will compete in States. The Cross Country season began at the beginning of June for workouts, and they trained for four months to hit peak fitness in preparation for the conference in October. The team won three out of nine meets this season, two against Knightdale and Wakefield and one at the conference meet. The Cross Country coach Dustin Adams said, “I think what helped us most during these five years were people coming to summer workouts, putting in the miles each week, and doing what is needed.”
Volleyball
The Volleyball team’s conference record is 11-0. Overall, the team is 19-4. In their 3rd game, they had their first loss which was to Cardinal Gibbons. The team later went on to only lose three more games while winning 19. Five members of the team made the AVCA All-American Watchlist: Brilyn Bourquin, Micah McKenzie, BreAnna McMillan, Harper Nelson, and Ava White. The AVCA recognizes the top seniors. During her senior season, BreAnna McMillan reached an impressive 1000 assists. McMillan and Nelson received All-Conference honors. Another achievement is the team’s 13-game winning streak at home, which ended with a 1-3 loss to Cardinal Gibbons on October 26.
JV Soccer
On Monday, October 28, the JV Men’s Soccer team beat Rolesville 5-3 to win the conference. They had a record of 7-1-1 in the conference and 13-3-1 overall. Collin Medina, Michael Pasca, Marcus Mcphun, and Alex Pleasant coach the team. JV player Gavin Dolby said, “Trusting each other and building a good culture helped us succeed.” The lead scorer was Captain Edwin Ledford, who scored 14 goals. The team lost 4-3 to Broughton and got knocked out of the Wake County Cup tournament. Although this loss hurt the team, they only lost one game after it. Coach Medina spoke about how they bounced back, “After our loss, we created a practice plan and worked together to address the issues. We lifted each other up and created a good culture.”
Women’s Tennis
The Women’s Tennis team won the conference for the fourth consecutive year. Sophomore Carson Margulies said, “Our tennis season was one for the books! We started the season against tough competition, but once we got over that hurdle, we thrived.” The team had a solid third round team duals finish and a repeat state doubles representation by Sophomore Carson Margulies and Cohlsan Wortham. Margulies, Wortham, and Sara James Helsel were selected for All-Conference. Margulies was proud of the season, saying, “We couldn’t have done it without Coach Davis, who won coach of the year and is always there to support us and make our season great. We wish our seniors Emilia Castaneda and Lisette Hunter the best of luck, and they will be missed. This group of girls is truly unbelievable. I can’t wait for what the next season holds for Millbrook women’s tennis!”
Throughout the season, all of the teams experienced highs and lows, but they worked hard and won the conference. They all had impressive seasons, with the Cross Country team winning their fourth consecutive conference, Jv boys winning Conference four out of their five last seasons, the Tennis team winning their fourth consecutive conference, and the Volleyball team going undefeated in the conference.
