When someone mentions sports, you probably think about football, basketball, or soccer. While these are some of the more popular sports, there are many more uncommon sports and activities that are very fascinating and fun to watch or play. These sports are played all over the world and give cities a chance to express their culture in diverse and creative ways.

First up is the Redneck Games. This competition is highly competitive and very entertaining to watch as each event has diverse activities and tasks that only the most rustic men and women can complete. Originating in East Dublin, Georgia, this game has been an annual tradition since 1966. This sport is played by each contestant participating in events and trying to earn the most points. Some of the events consist of toilet seat tossing, a mud belly flop contest, dumpster diving, and bobbing for pig’s feet. These events just deemed it the name of the Redneck Games. Unfortunately, this sport is not played as often today due to safety and health concerns, but it is still played occasionally on a smaller scale.

In this next sport, only the most athletic men and women can come close to winning. Wife Carrying is played internationally, even having an annual world championship where dozens of countries compete, including the United States. This sport is played in pairs as male competitors carry their female teammate through a challenging obstacle course. The fastest pair wins after completing a nearly quarter-mile course. When told about Wife Carrying, junior Briana Isaacs said, “Wife Carrying is so mind blowing and crazy to me, but I would love to see the game in person because it seems funny. If people really play silly sports like this, I wonder why they are as not as common.”

Not all uncommon sports are as different from normal athletics. Bubble soccer is a much more common sport and adds a cool twist on American soccer. Similar to soccer, two teams kick a ball to their sides of the field to earn points. But in this game, players play while wearing an inflatable bubble with handles. This restricts the players from running fast, using hands or knees, and limits eyesight. While there are cons to this game, it allows the audience extreme enjoyment because of the frequent falls, collisions, and slips. Other activities that are similar to common sports are dog surfing, underwater polo, and frisbee golf.

Lastly, Lawnmower Racing is one of the most dangerous sports. This sport originated from England and has been played since 1968. This sport is played by participants racing while riding lawnmowers. Players race around a track, (or if it is not being played professionally, anywhere they like). Since this sport is extremely dangerous, drivers wear helmets, knee pads, elbow guards, and more. This sport is a common outdoor activity for people in England and a fun event to attend professionally. This sport makes mowing your lawn fun, but be advised if you decide to play, go slow to be safe.

Now that you have learned about these abnormal sports, you might consider trying these over the long summer break with friends. If none of these sports appeal to you, consider creating your own sport for your friends and family to play. One day you might even see your uncommon sport played worldwide.
