On Wednesday, October 25. in Lewiston, Maine, a man opened fire inside a bowling alley and a bar, killing 18 people and injuring 13 more. Although the police had a picture of the suspect, they could not locate him for a few days. They eventually found Robert Card, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Friday, October 27. He did leave a note to his family on his cellphone, but the content of that note has not been released.
The small town was rocked by the event and was told to shelter in place until he was located two days after the shooting. The victims did not know the shooter, and the reason why he chose to harm them is unknown. What has been discovered is that he had reported hearing voices in the recent past and made threats to shoot up the National Guard Base. Although the shooter acquired the guns legally, limited information has been released regarding the guns and his mental health status.
On Friday, the list of the victims was published and the people who lost their lives ranged in age from 14 to 78 years of age. The victims who survived and the families of those who lost their lives to this senseless act have been offered counseling. Many of the victims died charging the shooter to protect their families and community members, laying down their lives for others.
