Social Media Uproar
February 2, 2016
From Pepe the frog to the new Twitter polls, social media has been booming with new ways of communication and humor. Although it is used by most people, not a lot know the origins of social media. Items such as the Kimojis breaking the app store, to Snapchat adding new filters, have boosted up the fun of using social media and have also added more to each platform.
Pepe the frog, which originated from the website 4chan, has taken the internet by storm. From being edited by its creator to people creating memes out of it, Pepe the Frog has caused many laughs across the nation. It began to spread around Tumblr as it was being used to describe people’s feelings, and it was also used as jokes. Sophomore Emily Rund stated, “Pepe the frog created social media. He is the living embodiment of social media. Pepe has made social media more entertaining.” Many other people like Emily feel the same way. Therefore, Pepe was a major trend of the past year and still is now.
On October 21, 2015, the official Twitter account tweeted that they were adding the option of creating polls. Since then polls have indeed been added, and Twitter has blow up with them. This trend has spread so much that the students at Millbrook are creating them to even adults making them. These polls have been used for the simplest things such as which restaurant has the best chicken, to which celebrities make the cutest couples. This new feature on Twitter has added a little fun. Senior Christian Thompson gave his opinion about the new Twitter polls: “I personally do think that the Twitter polls were a cool addition made because it simply give others the chance to voice their opinion on various topics.” Maybe there will be even more hype about newest talked about idea of a feature which is amping up the amount of characters that can be used.
Speaking of new features, Snapchat has added filters on top of their original black and white, time filter and location filter. Filters such as fast foward and others that you can interact with by raising your eyebrows or even opening your mouth have been added. Snapchat, the fun way of communicating on the stop with friends and family, has once again impressed us. Millbrook now has collaborated with snapchat and now has their own Geotags.
Last but not least, Kim Kardashian has broken the app store as she released her app Kimoji. The $1.99 app has the spin off emojis that showcase Kim Kardashian’s figure and things such as chocolate covered strawberries. Simple, but people love it. Overall, all of these new additions made to these various social media platforms have made communication for this generation of teens so much better.
