For those who are Spotify users, premium or not, the release of the Spotify Wrapped is a day that everyone looks forward to.
The first annual Spotify Wrapped was released in December of 2016. Seven years later, “wrapped” is even more popular than ever, and it’s no wonder why.
Spotify does the dirty work and gathers all of a user’s statistics throughout the past year and compiles it into a short entertaining slideshow. The video includes information such as top artists, songs, genres, albums, and total minutes listened.
Every year there are new tidbits of information to provide users. For example, this year all Spotify users were given a location where their music taste most fits. The location given specifies where other Spotify listeners have similar music tastes to you. Some locations include Burlington, Berkeley, and Cambridge. Along with the location, Spotify also released listening characters. Those characters categorized users based on what type of listener they are. Out of the twelve total characters, some include Mastermind, Hunter, Alchemist, and Vampire.
When asked if anything was surprising regarding the release of the wrapped, junior Rowan Kindl said, “The artists in my top 5 were inconsistent with most of my listening throughout the year but that’s probably due to their more numerous discographies.”
Responding to the same question, sophomore Lucy Enyeart said, “Spotify Wrapped surprised me with its new map feature which I think is really fun and a cool addition to wrapped.”
Spotify Wrapped serves as a place to look back to for many users, a way to remember and see how and when growth has occurred. Kindl said, “I look forward to Wrapped as a way to remember my best and worst tastes of the year as a sort of self-improvement through music.”
