Both during and after his presidency, former President Donald Trump has regularly found himself in the midst of controversy. Trump has faced over 90 felony counts since the end of his presidency, and there is currently no clear end in sight to his legal troubles. The charges brought against him have caused some states and people to debate whether Trump, who is currently running for a 2024 reelection, should be included on the presidential ballot in November.
Today, the jury selection for Trump’s hush money began. The jury will include twelve jurors from across New York as well as six alternates. With such a high profile case, these jurors are likely to face rigorous questioning from both the prosecution and the defense in order to ensure a fair trial for the former president.
For those who aren’t as up to date on the legal battles the former president has faced, here is the basic overview on Trump’s hush money trial.
The former president is currently facing 34 first degree counts of falsifying business records. These are the result of payments to Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen ahead of the 2016 presidential election for his hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. These hush money payments were made in regards to an alleged affair between Trump and Daniels, one that the former president vehemently denies. His 34 counts are in reference to different instances of misconduct, such as falsified ledger entries and checks in an effort to hide the hush money payments. If Trump is successfully convicted of these charges he could face up to 20 years in prison, although the judge has the discretion to decide the punishment the former president will face.
It’s still to be seen how this case unfolds, but the jury selection marks the beginning of a historic trial which will certainly go down in history books.
