This school year, Millbrook’s own Mr. Berglund was declared WCPSS Teacher of the Year. This is a very high accomplishment for Berglund who is only in his sixth year of teaching at Millbrook. Berglund is an Agriculture teacher. He has recently become a part of our Sustainable Agriculture Academy which began this year following the end of the Digital Media Career Academy.
One of the things that makes Mr. Berlund truly an honor at our school is that he is the only Agriculture teacher in all of North Carolina who is an AWS Certified Welding Inspector. This means he can grant students a welding certification. He has managed to certify 64 students in N.C. When Cat Talk went to interview Mr. Berglund about his newest achievement, he was actually in the process of certifying more students.
The N.C. Department of Public Instructions describes the award of “Teacher of the Year” as “To recognize and honor teachers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in teaching.” Mr. Berglund has shown just that! Senior Emily Tanner said, “He’s so deserving of the award because he is such a unique teacher and he’s capable of certifying welding which is such an amazing accomplishment.”
Mr. Berglund was once a student at Millbrook himself! He grew up in California but later moved to North Carolina where he found his true passion for agriculture. Berglund struggled with dyslexia but now uses it as a way to motivate and encourage kids to keep learning. Agriculture Science teacher Ms. Goblet said, “Mr Berglund’s passion for his content is unmatched in the agriculture education world. He is a walking example of serving others and being at your happiest by doing for others what they cannot do for themselves.”
Mr. Berglund also now privately owns the number one-rated welding shop in the state of North Carolina. When asked about his favorite memory from Millbrook he said “My favorite memory was that I was lucky enough to meet this amazing woman named Ms. Goblet, who is my girlfriend, so anytime I get to spend with her is my favorite memory!” Mr. Berglund is certainly deserving of his WCPSS Teacher of the Year award and all of Millbrook is very proud of him!
