As we return to a new school year at Millbrook High School, students reunite to celebrate weekly football games now labeled as FNL. FNL is a high school slang term for “Friday Night Lights”. It references the popular series about high school football and the surrounding culture. The expression is used to capture the spirit and passion of football games during the night, which are highly anticipated at a lot of high schools. It expresses the essence of the game and the social ambience that accompanies it.
Highschool football games are a lively celebration of community and school spirit in addition to being a sport. In Raleigh, NC, students of Millbrook High School gather in joyful anticipation as the stadium lights flicker on and the fall air turns crisp, instilling in them a fresh sense of pride in their school. A happy return to the school year is marked by the roar of the audience. The upbeat tunes of the band led by Mr. Payne, the mesmerizing dance team choreography led by Mr. Anthony. As well as the impressive stunts and cheers by our adored cheerleaders led by Ms. Chanel and the powerful and talented players trained by Coach Marshall. These weekly games become a beloved tradition that spreads joy around the campus and leaves lasting memories of friendship and school spirit.
Millbrook cheerleader Mackenzie Kurtz said, “Returning to weekly football games has reminded me so much of why I chose to do this in the first place. Since freshman year, I have made unforgettable friendships and memories that are everlasting. Watching the student section bring it all and be loud and cheering on the football players brings me so much pride and joy.”
Millbrook High School’s student section is a riot of color and creativity, along with being a field of energy and enthusiasm. Students fill the stands with energetic applause and chants as they dress completely in the theme of the evening. The themes are chosen each year by the ‘Millbrook Maniacs’. This year’s themes include: Black Out, Hawaiian Out, USA Out, White Out, Jersey Out, Bright Out, Pink Out, Millbrook Out, Halloween Out, and Camo Out.
The Maniacs insure a vibrant and cohesive front that raises the intensity of the game. Student’s faces are painted, their outfits are spot on, and they make their own signs that wave high. This energetic show of school spirit not only brightens the mood on game day but also reflects the student’s dedication to making every game an unforgettable occasion.
