It’s official! On Tuesday evening, Wake County’s Board of Education voted 6-2 to close schools on January 3rd. Originally, Friday, January 3rd was the date students were set to return from winter break. The one-day week was controversial amongst teachers and parents especially, due to the lack of projected attendance on that day.
The board members that voted against the change of agenda believed that parents need better warning of changes like this, highlighting that parents’ have complained about the high amount of teacher workdays that are provided in a year. These work days cause “irregular weeks,” says board chairman Chris Heagarty.
Board member Lynn Edmonds rebutted this statement claiming that having a one-day school week “doesn’t seem practical.” Overall, most who voted for the work-day believe that this adjustment is a positive change for teachers and their time.
Schools will now be out from Saturday, December 21, 2024 to Sunday, January 5, 2025.
