The Black Student Union (BSU) has added a fashion show to this year’s Fazes of the Arts showcase. The showcase will be on February 28, 2025. The fashion show was created by senior Zion Abdul-Malik. The show will be presented in three acts, much like a play. The fashion show features a collection of over 45+ clothing pieces, all designed by Abdul-Malik and inspired by his personal sense of style. The first act, Dollette, draws inspiration from Lolita fashion and the Coquette aesthetic, blending those influences with Abdul-Malik’s unique style. The second act, RAW, showcases a mix of edgy, chic, and punk elements, creating a bold, rebellious look. The final act, ABDUL, is more conceptual, driven by a vision rather than a specific theme.
The show has given Abdul a way to express himself through fashion. Abdul-Malik said, “All my life, I’ve always been a very creative person. Art has always been an outlet for me and fashion, being a variation of art, is the perfect way for me to express my thoughts, emotions, ideas, and overall my identity in a way that feels most authentic to me.”
His family has many artists. His grandfather was a painter, and everyone in his family was passionate about art. He started getting interested in art in 6th grade but became more serious about fashion design in his freshman year. He has designed clothes for himself, and this is the first time he has showcased his skills publicly.
DS Squared, Vivienne Westwood, and Marc Jacobs’s Heaven Collection are his biggest fashion inspirations. Other aspects of his life include baking, playing video games, cooking, and being a member of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America club (FCCLA).
Abdul-Malik is a large part of the Fazes of the Arts, and many are excited to see what he produces. The Black Student Union advisor Mr. Milner said, “The Fazes of the Arts Showcase is going to be good because of all the talent going into the show, and the natural leaders, like Zion, showcasing their skills.”
BSU president Stephanie Smith also shared her excitement for the show saying, “Zion has a big part in the showcase. It is going to be great. I have seen a lot of progression in the acts, and everything is going great. I love the courage and aspiration these kids have to be able to perform in front of their peers.”
Abdul-Malik also mentioned, “I am considering offering the pieces for sale after the show or perhaps giving them to the models who walk in it.” To see his show and more beautiful performances, go to the Fazes of the Arts Showcase on February 28, 2025.
