Millbrook High School welcomed prospective families to its annual International Baccalaureate Open House last week, offering a glimpse into the unique teaching methods and benefits of the program for families to consider. The event showcased interactive lessons led by IB teachers and provided insights into how the program prepares students for academic and personal success. “The Open House is a unique opportunity for prospective families to experience actual teaching by IB instructors here at Millbrook,” explained Mrs. Haddock, an IB coordinator at the school. “Teachers give 10-15 minute interactive lessons so families can experience inquiry-based learning firsthand.”
During the event, attendees explored how the IB program emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration, and communication through its IB Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning skills. “These skills not only prepare students for success in high school but also in life. They are essential components of a well-rounded education and are often overlooked elsewhere,” Haddock added. For students considering the program, Mrs. Haddock offered practical advice: “If you’re a 10th grader thinking about the IB Diploma Programme, I strongly recommend speaking with current DP students. They can give you a real sense of both the challenges and rewards of the program.”
Dr. Gentile, another leader of the program, emphasized the value of the event. “The Millbrook IB Open House allows prospective families to hear a brief introduction to our IB program and experience classrooms modeling IB teaching and philosophies,” she said. Haddock also highlighted how the program prepares students for college. “Talk to any former DP student—whether they’re at UNC, Duke, or even Harvard—and they’ll tell you the same thing: the DP didn’t just help them get into college; it gave them a head start.” With its rigorous academics and focus on holistic development, Millbrook’s IB program continues to be a pathway for student success.
