FCCLA stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, which Millbrook FCCLA truly represents. This club at Millbrook is a good representation of how the students involved want to inspire others on certain topics within the community and advocate for certain issues. The students get to pick a topic and make a poster board filled with information regarding the topic. They present their topics at the events to judges and explain what it is about and the connections within it. There are many topics to choose from which include fashion design, baking, and pastry, leadership, and many more. At Millbrook the advisor for FCCLA is Lisa Elstrom and the co-advisors are Jaqueline Elstrom and Alexis Komar.
The State FCCLA Leadership conference in 2025 is on March 31st, in Greensboro, NC. At the state event this year, Millbrook has numerous students giving their presentations who have all put lots of time and effort into their work to further their knowledge on topics and present them to those wanting to learn. The National Theme for 2024-2025 is “Dare to Dream”. FCCLA serves as the launchpad to success, fostering the skills and inspiration essential for college and career achievement in Family and Consumer Sciences. The four Career Pathways connected with FCCLA & Family and Consumer Sciences include Human Services, Hospitality and Tourism, Education and Training, and Visual Arts and Design. With the work of Millbrook students and those involved in Millbrook FCCLA, the presentations are outstanding.
Based on a student’s interests they chose a topic that they will succeed within. Previously, Sophomores Phebe Greene, Caitlin Agresta, and Charlotte Wilson chose the topic titled Sports and Nutrition because she plays a sport and wanted to see the most beneficial way to fuel your body with food while being active. They found the right diet and lots of information on Lacrosse and what sports and nutrition can do to affect it. Greene said, “I think FCCLA has taught me many life lessons beyond what I learn while researching my topics and putting together my presentations. I am so grateful for the support from Mrs. Elstrom and Ms. Komar throughout my journey! Thank you to FCCLA for teaching me to be confident.”
In Greensboro they will present to the judges and go to opening ceremonies, as well as awards at the end. This competition with hundreds of competitors will be difficult but Millbrook FCCLA has previously succeeded in the State Leadership conference. Co-Advisor Alexis Komar said, “This is my second year working with Millbrook FCCLA, and I love the passion these students have for success. They have a drive to win which makes for a fun environment and we always enjoy getting to go on fun trips!” As the conference comes up there is practice and final touches made to perfect their work. If they win first or second in state, they will qualify for nationals this summer in Orlando, Florida. Good luck Millbrook FCCLA!
