From being a sports star to an academic weapon, Lucy Ellis has done it all. Since her freshman year of high school, she has dedicated her time to being an active part of Millbrook’s community through sports and clubs. Ellis juggles these activities while also being a part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, creating a more academically challenging environment for her. Regardless of that, Ellis has continued to succeed in all aspects of her Millbrook career.
Throughout high school, Ellis has accomplished so much both academically and through athletics. She has been a huge asset to the women’s soccer team, women’s basketball team, and even the flag football team at Millbrook. Her efforts and dedication to help her team showcase her skills, determination, and leadership. She has continued to help lead her teams to many wins in her four years of high school and was even the NAC-6 player of the year for flag football this past season.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Ellis is an active member in many clubs at school. She has been a part of the Millbrook Executive Board (MEB) since her sophomore year and is now Social Media Liaison during her senior year. Her job as Social Media Liaison on MEB has allowed Millbrook students to stay updated on school events through social media, creating closer knit students. Ellis has also been an active member of the National Honors Society (NHS) since her junior year where she participated in volunteer work allowing her to show an impact on the community.
Along with her sports achievements, Ellis continues to also challenge herself in the classroom. She balances her extracurriculars while also being a part of the IB program and continues to show leadership in her classes. “One of the most obvious ways that Lucy has shown leadership is her work with Millbrook Executive Board, where she serves as our Social Media Liaison. That aptitude and drive to be a leader has been evident in the classroom as well, where she has not passed up an opportunity to be a group leader or to speak up without being called upon to do so,” says Millbrook IB teacher, Mr. Brown. By her teachers and classmates, Ellis is known to be confident, funny, and a “model IB student.” Her grades are proof of this as well as being awarded Junior Marshall during her junior year meaning she was in the top five percent of her class.
However, these accomplishments have not always come easy. Having to be a part of multiple clubs with leadership roles, balancing three sports, as well as being a part of the IB program, Ellis’s high school career has come with many challenges. “I make sure to keep my tasks organized in my planner and always set reminders for my assignments when I have things due. However, it can sometimes be overwhelming,” says Ellis on how she balances everything she does. “What keeps me motivated is honestly my GPA and just seeing myself grow whether it’s in biology or math,” she adds.
Outside of school, Ellis is known for her funny personality, positivity, and sympathy. Her friends describe her as someone who is driven and dedicated as well as outgoing and always there if you need her. When asked about Ellis’s impact as a friend, her close friend Sutton Desmarais says, “Academically, Ellis has benefitted me by being someone I try to be like because of her efforts and capabilities. She always pushes me and encourages me and others to do our best.” Her outstanding personality throughout school has created positive influences on the people around her.
After high school, Ellis will be attending UNC Chapel Hill and majoring in Biology. She is considering going into medical school as well. Her accomplishments in her last four years of high school have allowed her to achieve many things like getting into UNC and getting chosen as one of this year’s Outstanding Seniors. When asked about advice for freshmen, Ellis says, “Don’t procrastinate and get your stuff done, especially during your freshman year.” Many of her friends, family, and teachers are excited to see Ellis be recognized for her many achievements and are sure she has a great future ahead of her.
