Spring sports are officially kicking off at Millbrook High School as athletes prepare for their upcoming season. The spring sports at Millbrook consist of women’s lacrosse, men’s lacrosse, men’s tennis, baseball, softball, men’s golf, track and field, and women’s soccer. Tryouts were held two weeks ago, February 12th through the 14th.
The heavy rain and cold temperatures during tryouts made the conditions extra difficult this year. Due to last week’s snow, spring sports had to cancel their first week of practice, leaving teams with little to no practice time as they head into their first week of games.
Coach Derek Blackwelder is the head coach for the women’s soccer team. During the 2023-2024 season, they remained undefeated until the conference playoffs. Coach Blackwelder is very excited about the season, and he said, “The women’s soccer team is looking forward to another exciting season. We have a great senior class, and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish this season. Come on you Cats!!” Support the women’s soccer team at their first home game on February 24th against the Enloe Eagles at 6:15 p.m.
Men’s lacrosse is coached by Greg Underwood. Last season the team made it to the playoffs with a conference record of 8-4. When discussing their upcoming season junior Caden Bowman stated, “We’ve been practicing for a long time, it’s about time we surprise these teams with how good we are,” and junior Tyson Blalock added, “ We are really hyped for this season, we are hoping we can make it far in the playoffs.” The first home game for men’s lacrosse is on March 5th, against Pinecrest High School at 7 p.m.
Coached by Matthew Cope is the women’s lacrosse team. The team ended last season with an overall record of 10-8. The team’s first home game will be on February 28th, against the Corinth Holders Pirates at 5 PM. When asked about his upcoming season, Coach Cope said, “You can never go wrong when you’re centered on culture. Having a strong culture makes the wins feel better, and the losses are easier to see as learning points. It’s never about the result, rather about the amount of growth.”
The Millbrook baseball team is coached by head coach Ty Norwood. During their 2023-2024 season, the team went to the playoffs with an overall record of 15-11. The baseball team’s first home game is on February 26th against Cary High School at 6 p.m.
Coach Tim Blough is the head coach of the Millbrook softball team. The team is looking forward to a successful season. Support the softball team at their first home game against Enloe High School at 4 pm.
Men’s tennis is coached by Jeffrey Troch. The tennis team had a conference record of 8-2 last season. Their first home match is on February 27th, against the Wake Christian Academy Bulldogs at 3 pm.
The head coaches of the Track and Field team are Dustin Adams and Pam Parks. Outdoor Track and Field’s first meet is against the Heritage Huskies at Heritage High School at 3:30 pm.
Despite the challenges of the unpredictable weather, Millbrook High School’s athletes are very excited to show off their hard work and dedication. With talented coaches and strong teams across all sports, there is high anticipation for success throughout the seasons. As the season unfolds, Millbrook athletes are ready to give their best and make it a memorable season for everyone involved.
