On May 16th, the Millbrook High School Dance Department held their spring recital titled Good Days Ahead. The show was centered around different kinds of love and discovering oneself. They relied on several different sources to interpret the theme such as tech and costuming.
Darius Anthony, the head of the dance department at Millbrook High School came up with the coloring concepts. When considering options, he focused on what would enhance the dance. He used spotlights and rotating colors throughout the performance all to add small enhancements. Because the show was centered around love, red and peach tones were featured heavily throughout the recital. “Creating a show that shows the experimentation of love, romantic, platonic, self love, just different parts of love we’re exploring,” said Anthony. He shared that he chose black and red bodysuits for one of the Intermediate classes jazz routines, and for the other Intermediate dance class he selected flowy dresses for their contemporary jazz routine that would move nicely with the dancers.
The tech team was led by Millbrook High School senior Nate Baker-Sample, who has worked in Millbrook tech for the past four years, leading many musical and dance productions. Millbrook student Dylan Garrett was a member of Baker-Sample’s tech team of three. He had several responsibilities pre-show, including programming the lights, and adding certain lights for special cues. During the performance he focused on running the playback (starting the music) and cueing people on the lights. When asked what he liked about working tech, Garrett responded, “It’s fun to work with my friends and especially when it’s something we all contributed to leading up to it and we all enjoy doing it.” Lucy Kalampukattussery, a freshman in the beginner dance class, loved the lighting for the show. She said, “You can really feel the hope rise as we dance. I loved performing in the show and the cool lighting really made it feel special.”
There is a lot of effort and time that goes into these performances. The contributions from students and teachers this year is what really made the show special. This is the second year that the spring recital has been directed by Darius Anthony. With now two successful shows under his belt, Wildcats should look out for future productions next year!
