On Thursday, August 28, 2025, NFL fans were shocked to find out that Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons had been traded to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for Kenny Clark (a 3 Time All-Pro Safety) and first-round picks in the 2026 and 2027 NFL Draft.
Originally, Jerry Jones and Parsons had agreed on a contract, but after Myles Garrett made a record-breaking deal worth 40 million dollars per year, Parsons believed he was worth more. This led him to contact Stephen Jones, Jerry’s son, to try and renegotiate(ESPN). When informed, Jerry Jones said that they were able to offer him more money. However, he used tactics to pressure Parsons to settle for less money by drawing out the contract signing despite knowing Parsons wanted to stay in Dallas and refusing to speak to Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta.
After months of this treatment from Jones, Parsons officially requested a trade to leave from the Cowboys. On August 1st, 2025 Micah Parsons posted on X, “After repeated shots at myself and all the narratives I have made a tough decision, I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys” (Dallas Cowboys Official Website). In a post-game interview, Parsons described the entire process as “draining and toxic” (USA Today).
Even though Parsons requested a trade, Jones claimed he had no intention of Parsons and added that it was a way Parsons was trying to get more money from the team (Dallas Cowboys Official Website). Following the request, Parsons and Jones had not spoken directly to each other since the trade request was made, and only talked through Parson’s agent (NBC). This shows that the relationship between the two was starting to turn bitter. By late August, Jones began exploring trade options, likely realizing the contract situation was unsalvageable.
Parsons joining a new team became more realistic when he was seen at practice without his jersey and with a Cowboys jacket turned inside out to hide the team logo at the Cowboys and Falcons game. (Dallas Cowboys Official Website). Through his actions, Parsons was protesting the Dallas Cowboys for delaying his contract extension, and was showing that he no longer wanted to be a Cowboy.
