Many teens would find it to be difficult being an IB student while also being a student athlete and dancer. Only a select few would say that they would be able to handle it all, and senior Cameron Riddick is one of those students. Riddick has been described by her teachers and her peers as being responsible, fun, clever and an overall positive person.
However, Cameron describes herself as being very competitive. She explains, “I grew up with two older brothers, so when people ask me why I am so competitive, that is usually my answer.” While growing up with her two older brothers, she involved herself in multiple sports, including football, softball, and dancing, foreshadowing her future at Millbrook.
Riddick played on the JV softball team and the JV volleyball team her freshman and sophomore years. Her real passion, however, was dance. She has choreographed and danced in multiple shows at Millbrook including Spamalot, where she played a Camelot dancer, Jekyll and Hyde, where she played a red rat girl, and this year’s musical, Annie Get Your Gun, where she played a cowboy and an Indian. Theatre teacher and director Mr. Kotzian expresses, “Cameron has participated in our musicals every year and is a wonderful person to work with. She’s friendly to everyone. I have always enjoyed working with her and admire her as a person.”
All of these dancing roles have allowed Cameron to become a phenomenal and experienced dancer; she was named the Dance Captain of Annie Get Your Gun, which allowed her to not only show off her dancing skills, but also her leadership skills. She has also joined Millbrook in the Christmas parade for the past two years and was able to represent Millbrook in the Harbor Back-to-School Leadership Conference, a conference that has travelled all over the United States working towards making a positive impact on schools and improving leadership skills.
Cameron Riddick is in the IB Diploma Programme, and while that can be stressful, she has not let it affect her positive and playful attitude. Math teacher Mr. Jones explains, “Cameron is a fun student to teach. She has a strong desire to do well and understand content while at the same time bringing a light-hearted and charming personality to the classroom.”
Cameron plans on attending University of South Carolina this fall, majoring in marine science with an expertise in biological oceanography. Cameron’s high school career has definitely readied her for everything that her future will bring her, and Millbrook cannot wait to see how she leaves a mark on the world just as she has left a mark on our school.
