Greenlight a Vet
Veteran’s Day
November 11, 2016
Veteran’s Day is the day to honor every American veteran and victims of all wars. On October 30, 2015, an organization was created to show appreciation to veterans by putting up at least one green light around your house or workplace. Green is the symbol for hope, renewal, and well-being; the term “green light” is commonly known to motivate a forward movement. So far, there are 4,806,700 online supporters and the number increases daily. To join the team, all you have to do is buy a green light and put it in a visible place somewhere around or outside a residence, whether it be your home or place of work.
A large portion of the supporters come from Walmarts all around the country. Walmart is a proud supporter of Greenlight a Vet and even sells green light bulbs for 96 cents! While most of the supporters are located in the central United States and the East Coast, the numbers are rapidly increasing and are expected to spread throughout the United States over time. Social media is the main provider for getting the word out about this organization. The Greenlight a Vet website, Twitter, and Facebook account post daily and share different posts of everyone and their green lights. Pictures show places such as the Prime Meridian bank displaying these lights surrounding the building in support of their veterans. Many streets across America have several houses lit up with their green lights.
Another way to spread the word is through celebrities. Famous people have a huge influence on the country’s population, and when they share something that they are a part of, it automatically becomes popular. This year, the Bridgestone Arena was bathed in green in support of the Greenlight a Vet organization. The Country Music Awards program was paused so that Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley could introduce the movement in honor of veterans. With millions of viewers, the awards show sparked an interest in people to join the movement all around the country, better than a social media account could.
Although today, November 11th, is a special day to appreciate our veterans, this should be done every day. This is what the Greenlight a Vet movement is aiming to do. When asked if this organization is beneficial to veterans, Humanities teacher Mr. Grow said, “I think that any time a veteran can feel that their sacrifice is appreciated, it is a positive thing.” Veterans may not recognize their nation’s support every day except November 11th, so that is what the green lights are for. They show American citizen’s appreciation every day while they may not be able to in their everyday life. Veterans have put their lives on the line and devoted themselves to defending the United States and do not receive enough credit. Join the movement by purchasing a green light and visiting greenlightavet.com to put your light on the map. Make this Veteran’s Day special!
