The Tempest is a student-driven, art and literary magazine here at Millbrook. Any student attending Millbrook can submit written, photographic, or videographic pieces at millbrooktempest.weebly.com. “The website will give you more information about us; it’s also where we want students to submit their work,” said the advisor, Mrs. Davis. Video submissions must be brought directly to the advisor on a flashdrive in room 248. This year’s theme for the magazine is Distortion. On their website, distortion is defined as “A concept despised by realists for its ability to manipulate information. Artwork invariably carries a multitude of perspectives, mainly because a large majority of it encourages seeing the world through a new lens. Bias, deception, ambiguity, and fragmentation are welcomed with open arms in this issue as we prepare to view the universe through your eyes.” This can be expressed through poems, art pieces, videos, short stories, and more.

There are 15 students currently on the Tempest staff. They meet in room 1410 two Wednesdays of each month from 2:40-3:30. They work toward choosing submissions and putting them together to create the Tempest each year. Their lead editor this year is Loujain Al Samara, and their lead editor for layout and design is Samara Demary. Both students, along with the rest of the staff, are hard at work during staff meetings to accomplish all that needs to be completed.

Submissions are due on February 10, 2017. Make sure to submit them on the website or directly to Mrs. Davis as soon as possible. The Tempest editors need time to perfect the magazine for release. Apart from wanting submissions, the Tempest allows any Millbrook student to join the magazine staff. See Mrs. Davis in room 248 if you are interested in helping out the staff.

Previous Tempest themes have consisted of Identity, Lens Perspective, and Palette. These can be viewed on the Tempest’s website for references to what they are looking for when you make a submission. The Tempest staff continues to work hard in meetings to compile submissions into this year’s magazine. Make sure to look for a copy when it releases this spring!
