When the news hit the world that Donald Trump would be the next United States president, many people were not shy about sharing their disdain on the result. From major news sources, to YouTube stars, to actors and actresses, people have taken to the internet to express their outrage.

Recently, the cast of the famous broadway musical Hamilton took a moment at the end of their show to speak to Mike Pence, who was in the audience. After curtain call, Brandon Victor Dixon (who plays Aaron Burr in the show) shared his concern about the future of the country. He expressed fear on behalf of minorities living in the United States, and asked how Trump becoming president will affect their lives and, ultimately, their rights as citizens. Dixon stated his concerns respectfully and honestly, and because of the way he presented himself, Pence has said that he took no offense, despite Republican outrage. Pence said that he has taken the casts’ words to heart, and wants to Trump to be a good president for everyone. Despite many people demanding an apology from the Hamilton cast, including Trump himself, Dixon came out and stated that he believes he has nothing to apologize for, especially since Pence was not insulted. Junior Katie Hockar said, “I do not think the cast was unreasonable. They saw an issue and voiced their opinions on it, and did it respectfully which most people do not do. Freedom of speech; it is what America was built on!”

Many other celebrities have spoken up since the election. The night that the results were announced, singer Miley Cyrus posted several videos onto her Instagram where she tearfully proclaimed her disappointment in Trump’s win. She went on to tell her followers how much she believed Clinton deserved to win, and despite the fact that she is heartbroken over Trump’s win, she surprisingly agreed to accept him as the president. Stars like Tyler Oakley, an openly gay YouTube sensation, took the time to tweet about how people need to stay positive and how the fight to keep and expand LGBT rights will never be over. Other famous people have spoken, and will continue to speak, making good use of their first amendment right.
