The 74th Golden Globes certainly did not fail to deliver in drama, glamour, and controversy; between dynamic speeches focusing on diversity and the upcoming inauguration, big wins for La La Land, and Meryl Streep’s kudos to Carrie Fisher, this awards show was not one to miss. Going into the award show, everyone was on watch for who would come home with the coveted Best Picture, Drama: Manchester by the Sea or Moonlight. Both films received exquisite reviews across the board and knew that the the Golden Globes are the road to Oscar glory. Another big one to watch for was La La Land, which has busted out of the gate only a month ago with glowing feedback from the public and critics alike, despite being a quirky modern musical. In the TV show categories, Netflix finally had a good shot at either Best Series, Comedy which Stranger Things, or Best Series, Drama with The Crown.

Unsurprisingly, La La Land won seven trophies, including Best Original Song, Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy or Musical, and Best Picture, Comedy or Musical. Both Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight came home with awards, but in the end the battle for Best Picture, Drama went to Moonlight. FX also left the event happy with two big wins for Atlanta, as well as two other big wins for The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Netflix also finally got a win for The Crown, which came home with Best Series, Drama.

Even more electric than the giving of awards were the speeches made afterwards, most notably Meryl Streep’s. She won the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement, and used this once in a lifetime moment to speak out on an issue close to her heart: protecting the press. Her speech overflowed with passion for the cause as she challenged herself, other members of the Hollywood community, and the public to push for protection of the truth through the press. She made reference to president-elect Donald Trump mimicking a disabled reporter, saying she could not believe it was real life when she saw it. Trump has already replied on Twitter calling the actress “over-rated” and a “Hillary flunky”. Other winners also used their moment to speak out on issues of lack of representation of people of color in Hollywood and protecting the people from other countries who fear oppression once Trump is in power.

Of course, you can never forget everyone’s favorite part of award show season: the red carpet. There was no limit to unique fashion choices across the board. Emma Stone sported an enchanting Valentino couture silver dress with stars draping down the entire dress, matching effortlessly with the tone of her film La La Land. Another choice that stunned the public was Sarah Jessica Parker in a white floor length gown complete with a halo braid, looking strikingly similar to Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in the Star Wars films. Senior Camryn Thoman said, “My favorite part was the statement Evan Rachel Wood made with her outfit. She looked strong and beautiful and still feminine even though she wore a suit. I feel like she made a powerful statement about acceptance and being different without being offensive or angry.” From the carpet to the opening number to the after party, the 74th Golden Globes will definitely not be forgotten.
