Virtual reality is described as a three-dimensional, computer generated program which can be explored and interacted with by a user. The user becomes a part of the this virtual world and is immersed within an environment. While in the environment, the user is able to manipulate objects or perform a series of actions. Virtual reality uses a combination of our senses and the way our brains processes things to create a realistic experience for users. In a simulation, someone would be presented with a version of reality that is not actually there, but from their perspective, it would be perceived as real. Today virtual reality is usually implemented using advanced computer technology. There are a variety of systems that are used for this purpose, such as headsets, eyeglasses, and special gloves. These are primary examples of the most common gadgets used to reach a virtual reality. Junior Christina Bailey said, “I once used one in the mall where I was in a chair and it moved, and I had to wear these goggles. I thought it was really cool because it actually looked like you were somewhere else. The one I did was where I was in this haunted elevator where each floor would have something different jumping out at you and it was really scary!”

While virtual reality is mainly used for entertainment purposes, there are a wide range of other applications, like architecture, sports, medicinal practices and the arts. Virtual reality can lead to so many new and exciting discoveries in these areas because of how fast our technology is progressing and affecting our day to day lives. Whether it is too dangerous, expensive or impractical to do in real life, virtual reality is the answer. From medical trainee surgeons to fighter pilots, virtual reality allows users to take risks in order to gain real life experience without actual pressure or consequences in a situation.

Competition and prices vary when it comes to virtual reality devices. More expensive ones tend to come with expanded features and create a better connection to the real world. While the cheaper ones get the job done, they do not seem to capture the experience as well as the higher end ones. Samsung and Playstation are the top two businesses selling virtual reality headsets. Both brands compete for loyal customers, yet both brands share similar characteristics making their competition steep. As virtual reality becomes more mainstream, eventually the cost will go down and users can expect more serious uses, such as education and productivity applications. The goal for virtual reality is to have a natural, free-flowing form of a virtual environment interaction and create a fun memorable experience.
