Teacher Tribute: Eric and Lauren Genesky
October 14, 2017
Mr. Eric Genesky and Mrs. Lauren Genesky are two truly fantastic teachers. Mr. Genesky teaches AP Language and Composition and English 4, while Mrs. Genesky teaches English 3, year two IB/HL Language and Literature, and Theory of Knowledge.
The Geneskys met prior to teaching at Millbrook, and when asked how they met Mr. Genesky responded with, “She tells me that we had a class together before we started dating, but I maintain that we met while completing our student teaching semester during our senior year as undergraduates at NCSU.” After graduating from NC State, they moved back to Charlotte, which is when their relationship began to form. At the time, Mr. Genesky taught in Monroe but wanted to return to NCSU to earn his Master’s Degree. Therefore, they moved back, and this is when Mrs. Genesky began teaching at Millbrook.
The Geneskys are both very involved in the Millbrook community. Mr. Genesky runs the Video Game Club after school on Tuesdays in the Media Center. Mrs. Genesky is the supervisor of Key Club, Junior Class Council, and is a member of Service Club. Outside of school, Mr. Genesky likes running, movies, books, video games, and eating good food, and Mrs. Geneksy is currently working on her Master’s Degree at NC State and enjoys reading and shopping, especially at Target, her favorite store. They both have such crazy schedules in and out of school. Mr. Genesky said, “When the school year gets busy, sometimes it feels like our house is just another room on Millbrook’s campus. Most of the time, though, we like having the same schedule because it’s easier to enjoy our time together.” Mrs. Genesky said, “My mom jokes that Millbrook is her grandchild. We really do talk about school a lot, but we are trying to get better.”
As you can see, both Mr. and Mrs. Genesky are very passionate about teaching all of their students. According to Mrs. Genesky, the best part of teaching to her is “when a kid says ‘that went by fast!’ or ‘this was (actually) really fun.’ I also love seeing my students as adults and what they will be when they grow up. I am really type-A, so I am always so impressed when I let go and they just get it. The conversations are awesome.” Junior Emily Ni has Mrs. Genesky for Theory of Knowledge. Emily likes her a lot because “she challenges and inspires us as students, and we can share any problems with her without any hesitation.” Mr. Genesky said, “My favorite part about teaching is getting paid to help students become better readers and writers.”
The Geneskys represent what Millbrook truly is. Their hard work, dedication, and love for teaching and helping students has led them to build wonderful relationships with many students. They have had such a positive impact on students, and they will only continue to influence their students to be their very best.
