Representing NBC at a TIME event, Matt Lauer has been an icon of the TODAY show for two decades. As of November 29, Lauer has been fired from the program after complaints of sexual misconduct against a colleague.

Laura Conoly, Editor-In-Chief

Twenty year veteran anchor of the TODAY show, Matt Lauer, has been fired after a sexual assault accusation. Though this was the first ever complaint about Lauer in his time with TODAY, NBC chairman Andrew Lack reported that they had reason to believe this was not an isolated incident. The public announcement was made this morning via TODAY by Lauer’s co-anchors Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie. In the emotional announcement, both anchors commented they were conflicted with heartbreak for the man they knew, as well as for the brave survivor and colleague of theirs who came forward. TODAY has commented that they still fully intend to report on the situation as professionals, not his close colleagues. The victim in question is being represented by Ari Wilkenfeld and has declined to be publicly identified. Matt Lauer has not made a public announcement regarding the allegations.
