Breaking the silence
December 6, 2017
In rise of several sexual misconduct allegations in 2017, TIME magazine has named the Person of the Year a group called “The Silence Breakers.” This is a group of women from all different backgrounds, such as actresses and hotel housekeepers, who have come out against their attackers or are advocates for women who have suffered from sexual violence. Included in the magazine are several sexual harassment stories of these women and how they dealt with this hardship. Two of the women featured on the front cover are actress Ashley Judd and singer Taylor Swift.
The Silence Breakers is a social movement aimed at raising awareness for sexual harassment and assault. This movement gained popularity as high profile sexual accusations in Hollywood stormed the media. Using the hashtag #MeToo allowed supporters to spread awareness throughout social media.
President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and North Korean President Kim Jong-un were runner ups alongside The Silence Breakers for the front cover of TIME. When President Donald Trump was informed that he would probably be the winner of the cover, he declined saying that “probably” is no good for him and that he would pass. Trump had been named Person of the Year for 2016.
