As this turbulent year closes, we saw trends come and go with the seasons. However, some fashion trends of 2017 stayed throughout the entirety of the year due to their impact on the fashion scene. As a way to bite back at conflict this year, we saw incredibly bold styles, including animal textures, androgynous colors, and shirts that make a statement.

Known as millennial pink or Tumblr pink, baby pink was very popular in the 90s for giving a feminine, romantic look. However, in 2017, men started wearing the color and well-known rappers, like the late Lil Peep and alternative hip hop pioneer Tyler the Creator. The pale color has since become androgynous and worn in multiple ways. “I love that men are wearing pink,” junior Kristen Pickles said. “I think they should be allowed to wear whatever they want.” The best thing about the trend simply being a color is that you can wear it in any way you prefer! A simple pink shirt, nails, or shoes easily dress up any outfit.

Denim has been a constant in fashion for the everyday person, but this year saw a gritty, grunge denim look– torn, trashed, ripped, and frayed denim were all the rage. Especially seen in pants and jackets, ripped denim is an effortless way to add rocker-esque vibes to your style. I likely do not need to tell you how to wear this trend– I am pretty sure you are wearing jeans that are distressed somehow! No matter what age or gender you are, everyone and their mother wore ripped jeans this year.

Animal textures have been seen on large, luxe coats worn by popular celebrities this year. Musician and makeup mogul Rihanna and the ever-controversial Kim Kardashian were both spotted wearing big fur and feather coats all throughout 2017. Gone are the days where these coats had a niche audience–your grandma–because they are now a part of the bold and brash fashion movement. Believe it or not, the everyday person can wear this too! Pairing your fur or feather jacket with some dazzling jewelry can recreate this superstar look.

In 2016, fashion was subtle, until President Trump was inaugurated. Everyone had something to say about it, which led to many of the conflicts we saw in the United States this year. Models and public figures were soon seen wearing t-shirts with daring and controversial statements to share their input on all that was going on. Examples of this include we should all be feminists on the Dior runway, and we will not be silenced in NY Fashion week. Both slogan t-shirts spread like wildfire on social media, and soon brave tees were spotted in civilian life as well. You can wear this by letting the statement be the center of attention and keeping the rest of your outfit plain.

2017 was an odd year all around, but especially in fashion. The entire style world seemed to fall into a grown-up version of everyone’s middle school emo phase. Nonetheless, barriers were broken and voices that were previously unheard, were heard thanks to these powerful trends. One can only wonder what is in store for 2018!
