How to go bald for St. Baldrick’s
March 22, 2018
In past years at MHS, students have been given the opportunity to raise money for St. Baldrick’s, a foundation which raises money for childhood cancer research. Junior Shelby Holland has attended past MHS St. Baldrick’s events and said, “ I enjoyed watching people donate, especially someone I know personally. They are all passionate about this and have a story behind doing it. It is a moving cause and worthy of attention.” There are plenty of opportunities for high school students to get involved with this foundation and to make a change in their community.
Just like the past events at Millbrook, there are many community hosted events around the Raleigh area that allow for the students of Millbrook to stay involved with the foundation and help raise money toward their cause. This gives students like senior Connor Washington a chance to continue their traditions and get involved with the community: “I participate in St. Baldrick’s every year for two reasons: in honor of my little brother who had cancer, and to help find a cure for childhood cancer to prevent other families from suffering from this illness.”
The St. Baldrick’s foundation gives everyone the chance to get involved in fighting childhood cancer. On their website, you can find things like events to get your head shaved and how to start your own fundraising events. Right now you can get involved with future events in the Triangle by either donating or signing up to get involved. One event you can participate in right now is at the Lynnwood Grill, where, in previous years, they have raised upwards of $90,000. To support their St. Baldrick’s event, check out their personal event page, or go to their event Sunday, April 22 from 1:00 to 6:00pm. There are also multiple other events in the Triangle coming up later this year that you can participate in or donate to, just visit the St. Baldrick’s website for more information.
Senior Juliana Martinez participated at the MHS St. Baldrick’s event two years ago and said, “It was probably the most amazing thing I have done. It was an amazing experience that I will carry for the rest of my life because it proved that doing things for others really does make a difference not just in someone else’s life, but also in your own.” Juliana shaved her head, but there are many other options if you would like to help the foundation. She also said, “Donating to the foundation itself if you don’t want to shave your head, spread the word to those you think would want to participate, and remember that the money donated really does help.”
All information about upcoming events and ways to fundraise can be found at stbaldricks.org. With your help St. Baldrick’s can help find a way to cure childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.
