Scholarships are what help make college affordable and less stressful going into it. There are many obtainable scholarships available to all rising college freshmen. Though, obtaining these scholarships can be extremely challenging, whether it be competing academically in the classroom or physically for a sport. Students at Millbrook have been accomplishing great things for themselves and for the reputation of our school. The education it offers is superb and makes it possible for scholarships to be obtained.

Senior Alexandra Butler earned the Goodnight Scholarship to NC State. Students who receive it save roughly $19,500 per year. This scholarship is represented by 39 North Carolina counties. It is awarded to those who select a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) major when applying to NCSU and rank in the top 2% of his/her graduating class. The scholarship also requires that students score above a 1450 on the SAT and/or a score above 32 on the ACT. There are also a variety of other requirements to be eligible for this scholarship that do not have to do with academics. Alexandra started the Knitting Club, was an officer in many other clubs, gets outstanding grades, and is a part of many honorary societies for volunteering and academics.

Another student that received a scholarship this year was Senior Loujain Al Samara, obtaining the Park scholarship to NCSU which is valued at up to $111,000. The recipients get early course registration and a guaranteed spot. This scholarship is acquired through outstanding accomplishments and potential in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. It requires that you write two essays and submit information about advanced coursework you have completed. The scholars of Park are also chosen through exceptionally good character throughout their high school careers. Loujain is very committed to her grades and helping out the community around her. Her character is outstanding, and she is friendly to all.

Senior Graham Watkins obtained the Morehead-Cain scholarship to UNC Chapel Hill. This provides a full ride of four years at the university, including tuition and all fees. Students must apply early to UNC (the October 15 deadline which will change next year), and be nominated by the UNC Admissions Office through the Admissions Referral Program. Seniors Bria Bryant and Madyson Barber were both awarded with UNC’s Chancellor’s Science scholarship which grants $10,000 per year for four years at UNC. Students that get this scholarship aspire to become leading PhD and MD/PhD scientists.

These are merely just a fraction of the scholarships obtained by the collegiate senior class of 2022. Senior Victoria Pina, for example, obtained a full ride scholarship to Emerson College, and the tuition can reach upwards of $59,807. Recipient of the Superlative Award for the University of South Carolina, senior Adam Wenzel, said, “Getting a scholarship is not as difficult as you might think. Colleges want to give you financial support. I would just give the advice to stay hard at work in high school and do the best you can.” Each scholarship requires that a certain standard is achieved in order to receive it, and each moment of your high school career is important in meeting that standard. Looking into scholarships should happen early and is very important toward a financially achievable education.
