Kevin Hart steps down as Oscar host
December 8, 2018
Getting to be the host of the Oscars was one of Kevin Hart’s dreams, calling it the opportunity of a lifetime. He was offered this job earlier this year and he took it, as any comedian would. It would give him a chance to showcase his talent, making people laugh. However, due to his past language regarding the LGBTQ community, he has stepped down.
Following widespread criticism of tweets from 2009 and 2011, Hart announced December 7 that he was stepping down. In his tweets from the past, he used derogatory and homophobic language that stirred up controversy after the announcement of him being the host. In one tweet from 2011, he mentioned that if his son came home and wanted to play with dolls, he would tell him to stop because it is gay for a boy to play with dolls. After these tweets resurfaced in social media, Hart chose to step down from his position as the host of the 2019 Academy Awards because he believed that he would cause too much of a distraction from the talented artists that the night is dedicated to. In a video Hart posted on Instagram, he said that the Academy awards called him giving him an ultimatum, to apologize or to allow the job to be given to someone else. He chose to give the spot up instead of apologizing because he replied saying that he was not going to tap into the days of old. He stated that he has moved on in his life and does not associate himself with those comments anymore as he is a different person.
After the criticisms of his past behavior, Hart believes that this is the best decision for him and for the people around him. He believes that living in his past is something he does not want to do. He apologized for his behavior when it was due, but does not feel as though he should again.
