Looking into the college football playoffs
December 19, 2018
Ah… college football, the best way to spend your Saturdays. Kicking back the recliner or chilling in the parking lot of the stadium eating food and playing games are just some of the ways people enjoy football. It gives them an escape in which they are able to cheer their teams and strengthen their rivalries. Coming up in sports is the College Football Playoffs, where the best teams in the country compete for the championship title. Here is this month’s College Football Playoff outlook.
As of right now, the Alabama Crimson Tide is ranked the number one team in the nation. They have undoubtedly clinched their spot in the playoffs. Alabama beat Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and has their number one spot sealed. Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish is predicted to secure their spot in the playoff bracket as they finished undefeated, closing their regular season after a win against the USC Trojans on Saturday, November 24. When the selection committee meets they will need to decide who deserves the number four spot. Senior Arianna Rosario, a devoted Notre Dame fan, said, “It is very exciting to be ranked number three and possibly have a spot in the playoffs… putting my bias aside though, I do believe Notre Dame deserves a top-four spot.”
The Clemson Tigers have an undefeated conference record of 8-0 and an overall undefeated record of 13-0. They are in the number two spot following their win against Pittsburgh in the Dr Pepper ACC Championship Game. The outcome of that game determined if they would be ranked higher than Notre Dame.
The Georgia Bulldogs also have a slim chance of staying in the bracket, as they lost against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship. The Bulldogs have reason to be worried wins for not just Oklahoma but also Ohio State could also be detrimental. The Oklahoma Sooners will face the Texas Longhorns in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship Game and the Ohio State Buckeyes will face Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship Game. If both teams fall, (those being Ohio State and Oklahoma), Georgia would then be the first two-loss team to be in the playoffs. But a win for both teams will cause gray skies for the Georgia Bulldogs.
The College Football Playoffs are organized in a way where the winner of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl will play the winner of the Capital One Orange Bowl. The Cotton Bowl will be played in Arlington, Texas, on December 29, and the Orange Bowl will be played in Miami, Florida, also on December 29. Sports experts predict that Alabama will play Ohio State in the semifinals and that Clemson will compete with the Fighting Irish for the opportunity of a lifetime, to make it to the National Championship on January 7.
