In 1984, the first famed Met Gala took place. Eleanor Lambert created the Gala to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and to publicize its upcoming opening event. From then on, the Met Gala has grown into a major annual event in the fashion industry. It is often referred to as the “Oscars of Fashion.” Each year, the Met invites around 600 to 700 celebrities to the Met Gala. The Gala has a different theme each year; this year it was American Independence. Each celebrity dresses to match the theme, and many have famous designers create an outfit for them to wear.

   This year the Met Gala is on September 13, but only about 400 guests attended due to Covid-19. Typically, the more extravagant the outfit, the more loved it is. One of the most popular dresses from the 2021 Met Gala was Iman’s dress. It was a gold, floral pantsuit with a gold feathered skirt and a giant, gold feathered headpiece. Iman’s dress was designed by both Dolce & Gabbana and Harris Reed. 

   Kim Kardashian’s outfit was also very talked about at this year’s Gala. It includes a head-to-toe all black t-shirt dress with a cape. It covered every inch of her body, but still accentuated her figure. Kim Kardashian’s outfit was designed by Balenciaga Creative Director Demna Gvasalia. Lili Reinhart showed up to the Met Gala in a dress designed by Christian Siriano. She wore a semi-sheer pink fabric for the base, a corset silhouette, a high leg slit, and a medium train. The dress featured the “flowers of ALL 50 states” to align with the theme.

    Junior Emely Irrazabal spoke with Cat Talk about her favorite looks. Emely told us that her favorite look at the Met Gala was Sienna Millers because “her fur coat looked really good with her dress,” and “her makeup was more on the natural side which looked good and matched her outfit.” Junior Ava Joyner said her favorite outfit was “Kendall Jenner’s because it was elegant and beautiful,” and “she tied it well to the theme of America.” Ava also said that “She and her designer Matthew Williams took inspiration from Audrey Hepburn’s dress in My Fair Lady.
