Raleigh’s Rally for Ukraine
March 8, 2022
As the invasion of Ukraine by Russia escalates, the need to care for Ukrainians across the globe is essential. The support for Ukraine is increasing in the United States, shown on the national level at Biden’s State of the Union Address, and in the state, including right here in Raleigh. The local Ukrainian population gathered this past weekend in support of Ukraine by participating in a rally that took place in downtown Raleigh. According to junior Yana Pysmenna, she states that it “was a gathering of Ukranians and non-Ukrainians who were there to support Ukraine through the war. Over 150 people attended. It was extremely peaceful and respectful.”
To support the people of Ukraine and celebrate the culture, “people dressed in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, held the country’s flag, and made custom signs. The people would sing Ukrainian songs and the Ukrainian anthem.”
It was not just the Ukrainian population of Raleigh that attended. Pysmenna states “There were people from other nations like Romania and Poland who came out to support. It made me feel united with the people and comforted knowing that we all stood at the gathering together and ensured that none of us were alone.” Many non-Ukranians have joined the encouragement and support of the country, but being a part of the culture entails a deeper purpose for joining the cause. Pysmenna continues to share the importance of attending the rally: “The invasion of Ukraine is definitely more personal because I am Ukrainian and I have a lot of family that lives there. I feel this is important for my family and I to attend this to show support to our country and stand with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters. It is a powerful way to stand up for what we love and show support from the other side of the world.”
The current situation of Ukraine is very unpredictable and scary for those with Ukrainian ties. Rallies like these are a way that people from across the world are able to buttress the people of Ukraine, especially for those who are unable to donate money.
