Think about your favorite part of Halloween. It might be the candy, the scary movies, or even the costumes and makeup! If the latter is you, and you like turning yourself into a zombie or vampire, come check out National Art Honors Society (NAHS) and Art Club’s Monster Drawing Derby on Oct. 26!

The derby will consist of drawing monsters of your choice, or using pictures of your favorite teachers and turning them into your favorite ghoulish creatures. The members of NAHS and Art Club will use mediums ranging from charcoal to oil pastels and even digital drawings. On Oct. 26, from 2:40-3:40 p.m., students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to come to rooms 1408 and 1410 where there will be treats for all to enjoy. After the hour of drawing is over, artists will have the opportunity to display their artwork for public “bidding.”

When asked how the bidding process will work, art teacher and NAHS leader, Ms. Johnston, tells Cat Talk, “Folks are asked to complete at least one monster drawing over the course of one hour and then display their work for public ‘bidding.’ Using a QR code or link anyone can sign up and ‘bid’ on up to 4 artworks. Winning bids will be announced on Friday afternoon 4th block and winners will be notified to pick up their artwork.”

Anyone at Millbrook is welcome to join; If you are interested in participating, be sure to check the sign-up sheet outside Ms. Johnston’s room, 1408, to get involved. Ms. Johnston says, “We welcome volunteers to help register or check-in participants and folks to host or make sure everyone has their own supplies. More importantly, we want people to come out and draw! Make Monsters!!!”

Cat Talk asked Ms. Johnston how she came up with this idea and she said, “We borrowed the idea from the NC Museum of Art’s annual fundraising event where all kinds of artists, emerging and established, create drawings live on-site. Museum visitors can watch and then have the chance to collect one of the pieces for a donation of $50. All money raised goes towards community programming.”

The NAHS and Art Club are very excited for this opportunity to showcase their work and flaunt their skills. Ms. Johnston stated that she’s very excited “about the different types of monsters, from whimsical to scary, the techniques used, and watching people of all backgrounds making art together no matter what drawing experience they have.”

Make sure to mark your calendars for Oct. 26 after school for drawing, treats, and fun! We can’t wait to see what ghoulish creations you Wildcats have in store!
