There is no doubt that everyone loves when the holiday season comes around, especially with Halloween and Christmas being the top two favorite holidays of the year. Both of these holidays have their own benefits that make people believe that one is superior to the other, including decorations, treats, movies, outfits, etc. However, one holiday rings true, in my opinion, to be the best holiday in many aspects, and that is Christmas.

Decorations are always fun to set up and to look at when driving past houses. Christmas and Halloween allow for people to express their design skills by putting up festive decorations to make people get into the season. Although both holiday decorations are cool and fun to look at in their own ways, Christmas decorations will always be superior. Christmas decorations focus more on the colorful lights, Christmas trees, and “North Pole” decor that light up the atmosphere, bringing warmth to families. In contrast, Halloween decorations broadcast ghosts, clowns, spiderwebs, and graveyards that scare people by not eliciting comforting feelings in kids or families. Therefore, Christmas has a one up on Halloween, as its decorations are comforting and not at all scary. Senior Riley Sadler agrees by saying, “Christmas is better because the decorations aren’t scary.”

Treats are always the best parts of any holiday, especially for Christmas and Halloween, as both bring their own types of yummy, delicious treats. Trick-or-treating is an all-time favorite activity for people on Halloween, as it gives people free candy, like Kit Kats, Skittles, M&Ms, etc. Meanwhile, on Christmas morning, people enjoy opening their stockings to receive treats, like candy canes, chocolates, cookies, etc. No one passes up getting treats. Besides, we can’t forget about the presents that Christmas brings as a bonus from just getting candy from strangers.

No other holiday brings people together like Halloween and Christmas through entertainment, including fan-favorite, classic movies. Where Halloween brings scary movies, Christmas brings classic, heartfelt movies. For example, movies like “Home Alone,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and “The Santa Clause,” give families comforting movies to watch that also teach important life lessons during the Christmas season. However, Halloween movies, like “The Shining,” “Scream,” and “It,” exhibit scary scenes that give people nightmares. Although some movies, like “Hocus Pocus,” “Halloweentown,” “Casper,” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” are still family-friendly Halloween movies that do not give people the shakes, ultimately, it’s better to feel the comforting feelings rather than the scary ones when watching holiday movies.

In addition, let’s not forget about the breaks associated with these two holidays. Halloween doesn’t even give you a day off from school, but Christmas gives you a two-week long winter break. Sadler points this out perfectly by saying, “Christmas is better than Halloween because there’s a long break.” Not to state the obvious, but two weeks off school is much better than having to go to school on Halloween.

Lastly, both of these popular holidays allow for people to dress up for the season. Costumes allow people to hide behind a mask for Halloween, whereas ugly Christmas sweaters and family matching pajama sets allow people to get into the festive spirit through all of December. In my opinion, the comfy and warm outfits associated with Christmas absolutely trump the itchy, uncomfortable, and scary costumes Halloween brings. Also, what’s better than matching with your family in pajamas and embarrassing yourself with an ugly sweater every now and then.

With Halloween approaching in just a few days, try to take into account the aspects that show Christmas is the better holiday. Besides, everyone starts counting down the days until Christmas towards the middle of the year, while most people only think about Halloween when October begins. Halloween and Christmas are definitely the top favorite holidays, but, in my opinion, Christmas is the better holiday to celebrate.
