On Tuesday February 21, South Korean Court passed a law allowing LGBTQ+ couples to seek the same health benefits. Plaintiff Seong-wook had registered as a “spousal dependant” for health insurance coverage under the government-affiliated National Health Insurance Service (NHIS).

The NHIS revoked So’s rights as a dependent and enforced premium payments after coming to the conclusion that he was in a same-sex relationship. So and his partner decided to sue the NHIS back in 2021 for discrimination.  lost in a lower court but finally received a ruling in their favor for not only them as a couple, but all LGBTQ+ couples across South Korea.
