If you are willing to travel 4,882 miles and looking for a unique opportunity, free tuition can be found. According to the College Board, the average individual spends 9,410 dollars on in-state tuition at public colleges per year. After 4 years this adds up to just under 38,000 dollars. Add another 40,000 dollars on top of that for room and board, and you are approaching 80,000 dollars. If you consider studying in Germany, you can cut this cost in half.

Germany started this with the idea of bringing growth and skill to their economy. According to the Washington Post, German companies have struggled over the years filling jobs due to the lack of skilled workers. Offering free tuition attracts not only US students, but students from all around the world. The average cost of studying in Germany is 10,520 dollars a year; 540 dollars for school fees and 9,980 dollars for living amenities.

Junior Aydriyan Upchurch thinks that it would be an amazing opportunity to study in Germany. Aydriyan says, “College is really expensive and having the opportunity to study what I want with less money on my mind would relieve my constant stress.”

German institutions are even offering a variety of courses in English to attract foreigners. According to BBC News, there are over 900 courses ranging from political science to engineering offered in English. Although many other countries have joined the trend of teaching in other languages, Germany is the only country that offers free tuition for everyone.

Another factor that attracts students to Germany for college is the cultural experience. Studying in a foreign country allows for students to be exposed to a different culture and way of living. Senior Jordin Williams would love to study in Germany because of her passion for traveling: “I love traveling and there’s no better combination than cheap and travel.”  Germany is bordered by 9 other countries, which allows for many destinations to be visited.

Studying abroad is a growing trend, whether it be for a summer or semester. If saving money and seeing other parts of the world are of interest to you, perhaps college in Germany is a great option to explore.
