Tragedy strikes South Florida High School
February 15, 2018
Yesterday afternoon around 3:00 pm a gunman opened fire on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The attack left at least 17 victims dead and 14 injured after the gunman pulled a fire alarm sending students out of their classrooms and outside the school. As they exited the building, they were met by the gunman, 19 year old Nikolas Cruz, a former student at the school. Cruz was recently expelled from the school due to disciplinary problems, according to Broward County Public Schools. Using a rifle, Cruz shot students exiting the building and then followed those running back into the school. He allegedly targeted classrooms with students hiding in them and shot in the classrooms through the windows. He then evacuated the building amongst the other students where he was later found in a neighboring community. This is now listed as one of the ten most deadly shooting in modern US history. Law enforcement has said that Cruz is now facing 17 counts of premeditated murder.

Our honest opinion towards this subject is: It was very unnecessary and there was no point of him to kill 17 innocent teenagers. Nikolas Cruz had a very unfortunate childhood. His father died when he was only two years old, and his mother passed away only four months ago. This could’ve very well lead to some feeling of loneliness, but is no excuse for the tragic murders of Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Beigel, Martin Duque Anguiano, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Christopher Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alexander Schachter, Carmen Schentrup and Peter Wang. There has been 18 school shootings in just the first two months of 2018. With a number like that it’s obvious that people all around the country are searching for a solution. We don’t know of a definite way to fix this problem, but changing gun laws should be the first step taken towards a safer school for us students. Some of you might have seen a post on social media about a day on April 20th where at 10am students are to walk out of school and not return until Congress updates the gun laws. We think that this is a wonderful idea but it needs to have some type of visible protest. instead of leaving school we should have signs and posters with messages about the event in Florida. The students from Douglas highschool shouldn’t be protesting alone, we need to make a change, children can’t keep dying.
