As of Tuesday, October 25, Rishi Sunak has officially been named as Great Britain’s newest prime minister. Sunak takes office after the resignation of Liz Truss just 44 days prior, beating out opponent Boris Johnson who dropped his bid for the office on October 23. He has pledged to work toward “stability and unity,” referencing the fact that Britain has had three leaders in the past seven weeks. He will be both the first British Asian prime minister as well as the youngest.
Sunak is now in the process of establishing his cabinet, choosing to keep Jeremy Hunt on as the chancellor of Exchequer. It is also expected that an economic plan to fix some of the mistakes of his predecessor will be laid out by October 31. However, some Britains worry that the former banker and multimillionaire is too rich to be connected with the struggles of the common people.
