In a small town in South Carolina, Hampton County, the Murdaugh family has been a very prominent name. They were solicitors and lawyers in circuit 14 for over 100 years. In June 2021, Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed on the family land, where their husband and father, Alex Murdaugh found them. After months of investigation, in October 2021, South Carolina officials charged Alex Murduagh with the murders of his wife, Maggie Murduagh, and son, Paul Murdaugh.

  Alex Murduagh went to trial and pleaded not guilty to the charges of the double murder of his wife and son Paul and Maggie Murdaugh. During his testimony he revealed that the 99 counts of fraud he is now charged with on top of the double murders are true. Over many years he was hiding money from his clients and his law firm partners to keep from his own wealth. Also during his testimony he admitted to lying to the investigators in the early days of this case about his whereabouts throughout the night. While on the stand he said multiple times that he did not kill his wife nor his son. 

   Netflix came out with a series highlighting everything surrounding the Murdaughs, called Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. This series put this case on a national stage and captivated a huge audience, putting all eyes on this case. Many Millbrook students have watched this series, Mia Claire Vitale senior of Millbrook said, “After watching this I want to stay caught up on the case and can’t wait to hear the final decision of the jury.”This case will be one that is remembered for all of the things that were uncovered following the murders of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh. 

   The case is still in trial and the jurors will meet soon to discuss everything from the 3 week long trial. Thejury will talk over everything and come to a decision that will determine Alex Murduagh’s future and the future of the long standing family name Murdaugh.
