Did the FBI already know about the school threats? If so, why didn’t they do anything about it? Here’s what we know:
Over a year ago, a teen named Colt Gray was investigated by the FBI about pictures of guns and threats of shooting up the Apalachee High School located in Atlanta, Georgia. The investigation began when threats were posted anonymously on the internet and linked back to him
When the FBI approached the Gray family house, the father claimed that he had access to firearms in the house for activities like hunting to cut him down on video games. Colt Gray denied the post on the internet claiming he knows nothing about them. The father said that Colt Gray got bullied daily and “ridiculed” by classmates, so it was hard for him to go to school.
September 4th, 2024 marks the day of the deadly school shooting at Apalachee High School. During a lecture, he asked the teacher to go to the office and she agreed to let him go with his belongings, unaware of the events that would happen. He went to the bathroom to take the rifle out of his bag and walked out. He went back to his class and knocked on the door. A student named Lyela noticed a gun and didn’t open the door. So instead, he went to the classroom next door and started shooting. When the FBI confronted him the shooter immediately surrendered and went into a lying position.
As a result, four people didn’t survive the shooting. Christina Irimie, a 53-year-old math teacher, and Richard Aspinwall, a 39-year-old math teacher and assistant coach. “He would always push us to be who we are, always made sure we were doing the right thing,” a student said about the coach. As well as, 14-year-olds, Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn were killed in the shooting.
Colt Gray, was charged as an adult with four counts of murder and life imprisonment. The father was charged with second hand degree murder and life imprisonment as well.
A math teacher named Ms. Sutton at Millbrook High School shared her concerns about school safety stating, “It’s sad to think about how students come to school scared that they might be next and school is supposed to be a comfortable environment for students.” Ultimately, bullying and mental health issues should be a number one priority in schools. This is why counselors should be prioritized in school, and why students should be encouraged to visit more often since that is what they are for.
