The Black Student Union (BSU) at Millbrook was established in September 2021 by LaNita Hester. The club is advised by Mr. Abdul-Aziz, Ms. Moore, Mr. Millner, and Ms. Mond. The current officers are President Stephanie Smith, Vice Presidents Victoria James and Tamia Richardson, Secretaries Jordan Jefferys and James Jones, and Social Media Managers Jaylin Halim and Trinity Jackson.
As stated in their interest meeting slideshow, “BSUs started at college campuses in the 1960s. Their purpose was to combat racial discrimination, address brutality, and unite the community. Here at Millbrook, our Black Student Union is meant to promote student growth through conversation and community. We are here to inspire.”
BSU organizes several events throughout the year, such as the Thanksgiving Potluck, Black History Month Spirit Week, the Fazes of the Arts showcase, and multiple celebratory parties throughout the year. Collaboration with other clubs is also a major focus. On April 4, BSU collaborated with the Culture Club and the Muslim Student Association club to discuss Eid and Ramadan. BSU also participated in a campus cleanup hosted by the Culture Club.
One of BSU’s highlights during Black History Month is Spirit Week, which features themed days. In 2023, the themes included Black Heritage Colors on Monday, HBCU Pride Day on Tuesday, Throwback Wednesday, and Black Liberation Day on Thursday.
Every year, BSU holds a Thanksgiving Potluck. In this beloved tradition, students bring their favorite food and eat together. In 2023, over 45 students attended this event, and in 2024, over 60 students showed up. Advisor Mr. Abdul-Aziz praised the event saying, “The Potluck is always a success, and this year was no different. When sixty students bring their favorite items, stories, and vibes, it creates a melting pot unlike no other. Plus, the food was delicious!”
Another major event hosted by BSU is Fazes of the Arts, which provides opportunities for black students to showcase their talents in a safe space. Performances in 2023 included singing by Melai Amos, Micah Furguson, and Kaori Doughty; dancing by Micah Furguson, Kai Preddy, Marvin Diaz, Anthony Henriquez, Cole Walker, Jabrea Lawrence and Kellie Muzeau; a violin Solo by Xavier Brown; drumming by Naszir Hawkins; spoken word by Giovanna Hunter and Jaylin Halim; and a group dance by the African Student Association club.
Mr.Abdul-Aziz said, “Our first Fazes, it was breathtaking. Listening to Melai sing or watching Xavier play his violin really doesn’t get any better than that.”
When asked, “Why did you choose to join BSU?” Social Media Manager Jaylin Halim replied, “The club is inviting, and I want to be part of a community that supports me.” BSU welcomes everyone, and meetings are held in room 217!
