Monster Hunter Wilds is an upcoming role-playing adventure game set to release next year on February 28th. Many fans of the series had eagerly anticipated the beta’s arrival after the success of Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter World. Capcom, the company behind the Monster Hunter series, has been feverishly promoting the new arrival since the announcement. The game features a dynamic soundtrack, exhilarating combat, and a vast open world for players to explore and interact with.
Just from the previews alone, it’s clear to see that the visuals and graphics of the game will be quite stunning. The upcoming game has already earned itself the best trailer and best Sony PlayStation game award during GamesCom in Germany. According to an interview at Summer Games Fest, series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has stated that, “Using the latest high-spec console hardware, and on PC as well, lets us bring that immersiveness and seamlessness that we started the series on with World to the next level.”
However, with the release of the beta, there have been concerns about the combat system. According to long-time players, the mechanics and combat seem floaty compared to previous games in the series. In short, the weapons don’t seem to be as hard-hitting as in World; it feels weightless and without impact. There have also been modifications to certain weapons that decrease their effectiveness in-game. A primary reason for these modifications is the new Focus mode. This allows players to hone in on their target and locate their weak points, making it easier to land devastating blows.
One of the weapons that suffered the most from these modifications is the Insect Glaive. On the ground, the insect glaive functions as both twin blades and a spear, dealing low damage to a monster. However, what sets it apart from the other weapons is the aerial combat. Previously, players would be able to use the weapon as a pole vault to launch themselves into the air before dealing a chain of aerial attacks. However, due to the new focus mode, this high mobility has been almost completely depleted. After one aerial attack, players will immediately drop back to the ground; ending the chain. This change, along with many others, is one of the main complaints following the new game.
On the bright side, the game is still in active development, the testing phase, so there’s plenty of room for improvement. Monster Hunter is one of Capcom’s biggest game series. So, it would be a shame to disappoint players after such a breathtaking trailer. Despite some complaints, many players are still excited for the full release in February. Senior Noah Finerghty has said, “I already liked Monster Hunter Rise and Wilds looks much cooler. So, it must be peak.” Safe to say, there are certainly many expectations for the upcoming release next year.
