Giorgios Epicurean Market is new to Raleigh NC, having only opened three months ago in September. Giorgio Bakatsias is the inspiration, creator and creativity of this market. Being one of North Carolina’s top restaurant designers, Bakatsias continues to bring new ideas and experiences to the state.
The inspiration behind all of his restaurants is his Greek heritage. Originally born in Karista, Greece, he learned his love of cooking and ingredients from his mother. He is the leader and designer of all aspects of each restaurant, and he does this through concept development, branding, architectural design and interior design. Currently ranging from Chapel Hill to Wilmington, Bakatsias has created 21 restaurants.
Bakatsias makes sure to include tastes from around the world. He is an avid traveler, and he uses his experiences and tastes to create and show his memories. That’s why Giorgios Epicurean Market is so special. The market is a mix of dining and shopping. The goal of the restaurant was to share all of Bakatsias favorite foods and items from his journeys. Bakatsias said, “I remember going to the markets in Greece with my mom as a child. It was a beautiful, vibrant place to get lost in the ingredients and connect with the growers and makers.”
This market was created to mimic a mix of local markets throughout the world. From the favorite connections he has made with locals, to the amazing food he has been served, the market inhabits all of these cultural differences. As a culinary chef for over 30 years, Bakatsias also hand picks every food and beverage served.
At GEM, each shopper can choose from getting items, fresh made food or prepared meals to go. The menu is split into five sections: breakfast, coffee and tea, all-day menu, prepared foods and brunch. Brunch is only served on Sunday, but the rest can be found on the daily menu.
The menu is also based off of the three B’s: butcher, baker and beverages. With specialty cuts of meat and specific beverages maken, the menu is thoroughly thought out for the best dining experience possible. Since Bakatsias can’t be in charge every day at GEM, William D’Auvray is the partner and executive chef at the market.
Another goal of GEM is to not only immerse the customer in a fine dining experience, but it is also to teach them about the markets and food overseas. The market’s website reads, “This is a place to learn about our products, their benefits, and how to use and incorporate them in everyday life.” This can be done by exploring the gifts, trying the food and wine, visiting the market with friends and family, or picking up a favorite cut of meat on the way home.
If you’re looking for good food and a different dining experience, I would definitely recommend Giorgios Epicurean Market. From the good food to the joyful energy within, this is the perfect place for a weekday lunch or a Sunday brunch. If you enjoy this restaurant, Raleigh also houses Rosewater, Las Ramblas, Giorgio Pizza Bar, and East End Bistro. These are all restaurants created and inspired by Bakatsias.
