The Netflix show Wednesday, produced by Tim Burton, has been a hit since its first season was released in November 2022. After season one received a 73% Tomatometer and an 83% Popcorn Meter on Rotten Tomatoes, fans have been raving for the next season to come out. This summer, on August 6th, the new season was released, and here’s what you need to know before you watch it.
The Netflix series Wednesday follows the life of Wednesday Adams—the psychic, ghastly teenage daughter of the Adams family. Season one followed her first year at Nevermore High, a school filled with “Outcasts” with supernatural powers. Although she is not thrilled with her enrollment at Nevermore after being expelled from her previous school, her parents, Morticia and Gomez, are overjoyed, and they urge her to make the best of it because it was the place where they first met.
While at Nevermore, Wednesday is pushed outside her comfort zone as she tries to manage an especially colorful roommate, Enid Sinclair, as well as her emerging psychic powers. Wednesday’s stay at Nevermore takes a turn for the worse when her classmate, Rowan, tries to murder her in an attempt to prevent a prophecy of his mother’s in which Wednesday engages in a battle that destroys the whole school. Although Rowan almost succeeded, an unknown monster stepped in and killed him before he could kill Wednesday. Despite Wednesday trying to convince the cops to intervene, they refused, and the monster struck again, gravely injuring Wednesday’s friend, Eugene.
After her friend gets injured, Wednesday decides to ditch the cops and investigate on her own. During her search for Rowan’s prophecy’s origin, Wednesday discovers the Nightshades, a secret outcast society, and also the origin of the prophecy. Upon further investigation, Wednesday discovers that her ancestor, Goody Adams, founded the society before she was accused of being a witch by the town, Jericho’s founder, Joseph Crackstone, who wanted to get rid of all outcasts. Crackstone tries to kill all of the outcasts, but Goddy manages to escape, and in an act of revenge, Goody curses Crackstone’s soul in a sealed coffin.
The plot thickens during parents’ weekend when Wednesday’s father, Gomez, is arrested by Sheriff Galpin for murdering a man named Garret Gates years ago while Gomez attended the school. It is later revealed that Gomez had taken the fall for his wife, Morticia, who had really killed Garret. Garret was a descendant of Joseph Crackstone, and he tried to fulfil his ancestor’s wish by poisoning the whole school of outcasts, but Morticia stopped him. The discovery of evidence supporting these claims led to Gomez’s release from jail.
After her father was released from jail, Wednesday began to have visions from Goody Adams, in which she is instructed to investigate the Gate’s estate. At the Gate’s home, Wednesday uncovers that Garrett’s younger sister, who had been presumed dead, may still be alive.
During a visit by Wednesday’s Uncle, Fester, he identifies the unknown monster as a Hyde: a creature that is dormant in a human body, but through psychic inducement or traumatic events can be unleashed. Uncle Fester says that these Hydes are often controlled by a host, which begins the search for the host. Wednesday discovers the identity of the Hyde in a vision she has during a kiss with Tyler Galpin, which reveals his identity as the Hyde. After catching Tyler, he admits to his acts and the people he murdered, but the search for the host continues.
In hopes of uncovering more about his attack and possibly the host, Wednesday visits Eugene in the hospital, and Eugene tells her that he had gone to see Mrs. Thornhill, the botany teacher whom Wednesday had grown close to, shortly before the attack. Wednesday and Nevermore Principal Weems go to investigate Mrs. Thornhill and discover her identity as Laurel Gates and the Hyde master. She admits to brainwashing Tyler and forcing him to kill outcasts to fulfill her plan to kill all outcasts, but she still does not give up. She stabs Principal Weems and injects her with a poison, killing her, and hits Wednesday over the head, also killing her-for now. Mrs. Thornhill uses Wednesday’s blood to break the curse on Joseph Crackstone. This raises him from the dead, and the two start to wreak havoc on the students at Nevermore, sending brainwashed Tyler to kill more students.
This is not the end for Wednesday, though, because she is revived by her ancestor, Goody. Goody revives her as her last act before crossing over into the afterlife. After being brought back to life, the battle from the prophecy begins. Wednesday and her rival, Bianca, team up against Joseph Crackstone in a fiery battle, ultimately killing Crackstone and resulting in Mrs. Thornhill being arrested. This is where the season left off, and now you’re all caught up to dive right into the next season!
