Lindsey Jones has been a Millbrook science teacher for just two years, and she’s already making an impact. Mrs. Jones teaches chemistry, earth science, and astronomy and advises a couple Millbrook clubs. Jones has always been passionate about science, not because it was her strong suit, but because she believes science is a great way to explain how the universe works.
Jones decided to pursue her career in education at North Carolina State University for her undergraduate degree, and she obtained her masters in science education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She was influenced by a former teacher she had, “I had a biology teacher who would meet with me after school all the time, helped me review subjects, she would really just go above and beyond, and once I saw her impact on me, I was like, I want to do that! I want to do that for someone else!”
Mrs. Jones always goes above and beyond to connect with her students. Not only does Mrs. Jones offer after-school tutoring, either one-on-one or in small groups, but she also advises three Millbrook clubs: the Gender Sexuality Alliance, Photography, and Science Olympiads. Jones is also known for creating exciting in-class activities.
Mrs. Jones works with a mix of grades, having an impact on many. Her earth science course is mostly freshman, her chemistry is both sophomore and juniors, and her astronomy class is mostly seniors. For any future educators, Jones gives the following advice, “Know that it’s a lot, it’s like you have multiple jobs at once…it’s a lot to juggle but it’s worth it!”
Senior Miles Estep, has had Mrs. Jones for both chemistry and astronomy and believes, “She’s very approachable and she always makes you feel comfortable, and like you can actually talk to her.” Estep also adds, “Students in her class not only converse with her about the class content, but they’ll walk up to her and have conversations about other topics, not just school.”
Jones believes that for a classroom to be successful you need to have student representation so everyone’s voice can be heard and contribute. Millbrook science teacher Elizabeth Williams, has been teaching for over ten years and has been working with Jones throughout the year. Williams comments, “It’s always interesting to work with a new teacher, to see their perspective and provide them with support and to see their perspective as a young professional.”
Although Jones has only been teaching for two years, it’s evident that students enjoy being in her classroom. Jones’ engagement with students makes her a remarkable teacher and a wonderful addition to Millbrook!
