The Millbrook High School women’s soccer team kicked off the 2025 season with an impressive 4-1-2 record, securing the No. 21 ranking in North Carolina and the top spot in the Northern Athletic Conference (NAC). Led by senior forward Lucy Ellis, who has scored six goals and recorded 12 points, and junior midfielder Jordan Davis, who leads the team with six assists, the Wildcats are proving to be a dominant force on the field.
For many players, wearing the Millbrook jersey is more than just playing soccer, it’s also about school pride and connections. Sophomore Leena Shumate emphasized how being part of the team has allowed her to connect with others.
“Playing for Millbrook allows me to contribute to the school’s rich sports culture, as well as bonding with fellow classmates I may not have been able to be around,” Shumate said.
This sense of unity has been a key factor in Millbrook’s strong performance this season. The team’s chemistry has translated onto the field, helping them secure big wins and bounce back from tough challenges.
Every season presents its obstacles, and this year has been no exception for the Wildcats. Their only loss came in a hard-fought 1-0 match against Marvin Ridge, but they quickly rebounded with a dominant 5-0 victory over Middle Creek. Maintaining consistency and overcoming adversity has been a focal point for the team as they push through a competitive season.
Mental preparation and pre game rituals are crucial for athletes, and for sophomore Marie Falkenrath, sticking to a routine helps her get into the right mindset. “My pregame ritual is very important to me. For my pregame ritual, I eat a banana and do a handshake with one of my teammates,” Falkenrath shared.
These small traditions help keep the team focused and energized before stepping onto the field. Many players have their own ways of mentally preparing, whether it’s listening to music, stretching routines, or going through drills.
With a promising season still ahead, the Wildcats have already created lasting memories. Key wins, tough battles, and standout performances have defined their journey so far. With big conference matchups approaching, Millbrook aims to continue building on its success and make a deep postseason run.
