Toys make their mark in the Hall of Fame

Logan Powers, Staff Reporter

Do you remember your favorite toy when you were a kid? Well, that toy may not have been just your favorite. It could have been included in the National Toy Hall Of Fame! Each year the Hall of Fame inducts new toys based on if the toy is widely recognized, is more than a passing fad, is known internationally, and also has a significant influence. The list has a little something for everyone. Past inductees include the Nintendo Game Boy, Bubbles, Crayola Crayons, Dominoes, The Easy Bake Oven, and even an Etch A Sketch. There are a many inducted toys in the Hall of Fame, but is your favorite there? Sophomore Ashley Steele said,”My favorite toy was Bop It because I always played it with my family, and it was also a competition to beat the others high score.” Even though many of us may like Bop it, this toy is not in the Toy Hall of Fame.  There is a chance for Bop it to be in the Hall of Fame, as long as it meets the criteria set by the museum.

The 2015 inductees include the puppet, the Super Soaker, and Twister. These games came to be marked down in history with toys like Barbie and the teddy bear. Emily Vandersip’s favorite toy is the Barbie: “I could use my imagination and create a dream life.”

This year the new toys in the Hall of Fame are some of the most iconic toys in history, but who did they beat in the race to the top. The Wiffle Ball, American Girl dolls, Battleship, Jenga, PLAYMOBIL, the scooter, the spinning top, coloring book, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were considered, but all these toys were beat out in the end. Each toy went through the process of nomination and being voted on to see which toy will become timeless. If you have an idea of a toy that should be included in the hall of Fame next year, you can nominate them by going to http://www.toyhalloffame.org/nominate. Every year more and more toys are added to the Hall  of Fame. All of this started back in 1998, when the first toys were inducted in the Hall of Fame. The first toys added included Monopoly, Crayola Crayons, and the Etch A Sketch. These are some of the most popular toys in history which impacted generations.
