On April 25, 2026, the White House Correspondents’ Association held its annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton in DC. The dinner was attended by over two thousand journalists and government officials, including high-profile guests like Weijia Jiang (President of the WHCA), Karoline Leavitt (White House Press Secretary), JD Vance (Vice President of the United States), and Donald and Melania Trump (United States President and First Lady).
Just moments after Donald and Melania Trump were welcomed by the WHCA, gunshots were heard from outside the doors of the Washington Hilton’s International Ballroom. Panic set in immediately, causing many attendees to take cover under their tables and chairs, and for the Secret Service and security to escort government officials off the stage.
Around 40 minutes after the initial gunfire was heard, many attendees took to social media. President Donald Trump posted to his social media platform, Truth Social, saying, “Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended.” Trump also informs the public through social media that he, Melania, Vance, and the cabinet members are all safe and physically unharmed. Spokesperson for the Secret Service, Anthony Guglielmi, posted a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), saying their agency and the local Washington DC police department are investigating a shooting near the ballroom, the president and all officials are safe, and “one individual is in custody.”
So, who was the individual in custody? The suspected shooter’s name is Cole Tomas Allen. Allen was a resident of the Los Angeles area for around 16 years and mostly resided in Torrance, where he worked as a tutor for C2 Education. He earned a degree from Caltech in mechanical engineering in 2017 and then went to California State University, Dominguez Hills, to obtain his master’s in computer science in 2025. Allen was described as an “exemplary student” by a former teacher at Caltech.
Officials believe that Allen had been planning this incident for a while and even left behind a written “Manifesto” for his family. The “Manifesto” stated that Allen did not plan to hurt any individuals not a part of the “Administration”. He spent most of his “Manifesto” apologizing to different people in his life and criticizing the security at the Correspondents’ dinner. Only one person was shot; the Secret Service member was wearing a bulletproof vest and was released from the hospital on Sunday.
In July of 2024, Donald Trump was grazed by a bullet on his ear as another form of gun violence. Later, in September of 2025, a podcaster and friend of Trump, Charlie Kirk, was shot and killed as a form of gun violence. Gun Violence has become very prevalent in many communities throughout the United States. In 2024, 16,888 people died from a shooting in America. In 2025, 14,651 people died from a shooting in America. Gun violence in America has been an issue for decades, but has become more prominent as more people are affected by it. Mass shootings and school shootings have become a common theme in school and workplace safety drills and plans.
Donald Trump has signed many executive orders to lower the restrictions on purchasing and obtaining guns, despite feeling the effects of gun violence himself. Some Americans are wondering when the gun violence in America will end.
